  1. You may be interested to read these article about uneven brake rotor wear. https://www.mechanic.com.au/news/solved-the-mystery-of-warped-brake-rotors https://alconkits.com/support/brake-pad-info/110-the-real-truth-about-warped-brake-rotors
  2. Definitely enjoyed reading your service report especially the pictures. Very inspirational about the extra care and attention especially on the brakes. I will have to be doing more engine flushes etc to be sure that my engine internals are looking as good.
  3. Tony, I have just had a look at the photos of the PCV valve when you did the 120,000 km service. Sort of shocked how bad it looked then I remembered that I ended up replacing mine and have since been regularly cleaning it. Nothing unusual about me being an alarmist and a pessimist. I was thinking that if the PCV valve looked like that then how much oil vapour has been going through to the intake. I previously posted: This Youtube video showing the 2GR-FE intake explains why you should have an oil catch can. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2BYkrf-388 With the benefit of hindsight, I should have fitted an oil can 5 years ago when I first bought my Aurion. Now going to also fit an oil can to my standby Aurion Prodigy project car.
  4. It takes time and effort to be an informed buyer and to carefully select a reputable seller. I am regularly checking tyre reviews to find the best touring tyre for my particular vehicle. I do maintain a shortlist of preferred tyres. I have been going to the same Bob Jane T-Mart for many years. When I am there for a wheel alignment, I ask a "loaded" question of what tyres they would recommend for my Aurion. It certainly helps because the counter staff member also drives an Aurion and speaks from experience. I have also accumulated enough bad experiences to now ignore or blunten the "hip pocket nerve" such that I will only consider quality brand name tyres that meet my performance requirements.
  5. I did a previous post in early June saying that I would be replacing/upgrading the struts and springs rather than upgrading the rear sway bar. Front struts arrived very quickly. KIng springs took longer because they were a special order and they arrived. Well Karma must have decided to get involved and it has taken about 6 weeks to finally get the rear struts. During this wait period, I ended up going to wreckers and getting a rear sway bar off of a Sportivo; cost $50 and 2 hours time to remove. It has the same 16mm diameter but the bar is solid not hollow. In the meantime, I have been enjoying the improved handling with reduced body roll. Looks like I will be leaving the upgrading of the struts and springs for a bit longer and wait for warmer morning weather without any wind.
  6. It has taken about 4 weeks for the state of charge indicator to be consistently back in the green. Certainly took longer because of my driving short distances and with the headlights on all the time. Eventually I went back to just having the parking lights on during daytime and this has helped with maintaining a full battery charge. Next target will eventually be the battery in the girlfriend's Yaris. A few months ago that battery was complimentary tested at 89% by a local tyre workshop and they recommended that she buy a new battery. I was not happy and that battery is still going strong.
  7. I was getting all "precious" about the difference then finally realised that was a road test after you had done your oil change today. No wonder it was looking so great. I was initially thinking that was oil that had done a few thousand kms. Anyway, nice to have a benchmark to aim for.
  8. Change of mind about what car maintenance to do this weekend so did another quick check up before going back inside and keeping warm. Same as before, there was some oil residue in the bowl of the oil seperator. However, a check of the in-line filter showed that a few drops of oil had accumulated so gave this filter a good clean. At this stage, I am leaving the check of the oil can for a few months until the next oil change. I also checked the exhaust pipe tips earlier this morning and quite pleased with the colour becoming more of a light tan and dry rather than black and oily.
  9. I got too tempted by this special and pulled the trigger. It will come in handy when I doing some more engine flushing. https://www.autobarn.com.au/valvoline-engine-armour-engine-oil-15w40-6l?mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiTVRaa01EZGhOemcxWkdReiIsInQiOiJGelUycWtra2JaNmFZK3Rjbmw5emh6amJaVWxcL0ExXC9mNytyd0IyXC9vTGJtbU1MU1IxOG1PaWZSNVhrVVBEaU02dHJlQkVWSGpEQVNIUVJ0TGUwa2MwQk1qSjRTTVYrXC9WU2FqWmJUdktscXh2V3JKUzY0WktNK0htSjdhbUZyMXIifQ%3D%3D
  10. Following is a picture of the oil filler opening on my 2006 40 Series Aurion. There is some varnish around the top area of that metal protector and the oil on the dipstick looks lighter than the oil gathered at the back of the metal protector. You can see the side of the cylinder head which is clean as new. I do know that there is no longer any oil sludge in this area. Still getting some oil sludge residue around the PCV baffle area but finally getting there after 5 years of regular oil change intervals mostly at 3K intervals.
  11. Starting to look like it is the 2nd gear synchromesh which usually gets most of the wear. Hopefully double clutching will help to smooth the downshifting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlS6DF3NjJE
  12. Precisely why you buy quality tyres, brake pads etc. and drive defensively. You have to learn to identify the stupid idiots' behaviours and give them a wide berth.
  13. Looks good to me. When I have changed the oil, the oil sitting on top of that guard is clear/translucent. After about 1000kms, the oil is now looking a similar colour but maybe a lighter honey colour.
  14. When I want to play, my 2006 Aurion with 216K on the odometer performs. There is heaps of torque in the low down range. You have to back off on the accelerator so the front wheels do not spin on takeoff. Most of the time, I accelerate only using 2000-2500 rpm to get to the speed limit. There is plenty of power in reserve. When I need it, I am more likely to notice the transmission changing down a few gears. This article will give you an idea of the torque curve. https://wilhelmraceworks.com/blog/2gr-power-gains Peak torque is at 6000 rpm and my very limited personal experience confirms this. From my experience, the Aurion comes into its own as a highway cruiser. The 2GR-FE engine pulls like crazy from 100kph on. Lets just say that you can overtake a semi-trailer starting at 100kph from the rear and be doing 150kph before you pass the cabin. Just be careful of the steering wheel torque when under hard acceleration. Another thing. I have not been game enough or stupid enough to really push the Aurion to its limits. I am happy knowing that I have 200KW under the bonnet and do not have to prove anything except staying alive and getting safely from Point A to Point B.
  15. As my next project car, I would not mind a 2020 Camry SL V6 that had a cheapest possible maintenance car owner, It would have to be at a really low giveaway price because the engine would be so sludged up, need new tyres, battery etc. Something to consider in about 5 years when looking at eBay and Gumtree etc.
  16. Almost pulled back in. Got very tempted looking at the 6 litre and 10 litre packs then I remembered that I have recently done oil changes. Still got lots of oils on hand and running out of storage space.
  17. Interesting viewpoint but it all depends upon the TV series etc. I would much rather be tracking down and resolving that clunking noise. In fact, I would be rather pleased that it was fixed or annoyed if it was caused by my stuff up. Better to tighten a few bolts now rather than have to be replacing parts at a later date. Anyway, these days, I spend more time looking at YouTube videos than watching TV.
  18. The thinner oils have been developed for the very latest generations of modern engines which have much tighter tolerances. Oil manufacturers do refer the consumer to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations as per the owner's manual. When you look at a Lube Guide by Penrite, Nulon, Castrol etc, they usually offer 3 recommendations for your consideration. My current personal preferred selection based upon my specific vehicle and my specific regular driving conditions is 5W30. However, I will change to 5W40 or 10W40 for an interstate driving trip where the outside temperature is 35C and the air-conditioning is at maximum. Certainly more extreme driving conditions so I want to up the engine anti-wear protection. I located these YouTube videos which I thought were relevant to the oil posts on this thread. Are owners using the correct oil for their application? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASAdkJydBFU What does the colour of engine oil tell about the quality and performance of engine oil? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAcCK01XIqM This video is more about the additive package and how it can affect the colour of new oil. Why motor oil changes color and how to tell what it means. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCgL5_54Gy8 This video explains/demonstrates that a good quality oil is going to change colour i.e. getting darker because it is cleaning the engine internals.
  19. As well as a picture of the PCV. can you also post a picture of the oil filler cap opening as a comparison between a sludged up engine and a well maintained one.
  20. Following is just a suggestion. https://www.billrobertsontoyota.com.au/2020/03/05/toyota-australia-recalls-vehicles-due-fuel-pumps/ https://www.tat.net.au/pdfs/pages-index/isue29_oct012/issue290ct2012_p15.pdf
  21. Excellent pickup. You have got some good eagle eyes. Your snapshot is at the 3:59 mark of the YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0cf102I0Cg I was wondering about what oil he had been using in the past and the oil change interval. At the 2:12 mark of the video, looks like he is going to refill with Nulon full synthetic 5W-30. I reckon that within 100kms that new oil will be badly contaminated with dissolved oil sludge. I bought my 2006 Aurion on eBay from a vehicle wholesaler advertised as blowing smoke on startup with 165K on the odometer. My engine was never that badly sludged in comparison with that video snapshot. For the past 4 years, I have been avoiding having to remove the valve cover and been doing lots of oil changes to desludge the engine. Interesting because my Aurion now has over 216K on the odometer and I reckon that the valve train has no sludge. Knowing what I know now, on that badly sludged up engine in the YouTube video, I would be removing the front valve cover and the engine sump to desludge the engine. Oil pickup assembly would need to be thoroughly cleaned. Probably then fill up with diesel and idle for 10 minutes. Repeat with new diesel. Eventually new engine oil and oil filter cartridge. Drive for about a week then remove and clean the oil filter cartridge. Consider whether engine oil should also be changed.
  22. I will have a few years to sweet talk the girlfriend into getting a turbocharged GR Yaris then some back to basic and advanced driving school lessons. https://www.toyota.com.au/news/new-toyota-gr-yaris-rally-car-for-the-road#:~:text=The GR Yaris engine is,200kW and 370Nm of torque. Reality is more likely to be cruising down to the shops in the Aurion. Maybe by then, I would have had the Y pipe modification done and fitted hi-flow mufflers etc.
  23. More planning ahead for retirement. This is my motivational song when I am in the office. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNDSwAZ6V2w Probably gives you an idea what I would like to be doing when going for a trip to the shops in retirement.
  24. If this was an automatic transmission then I would be very confident in saying that the transmission fluid level is low and needs to be adjusted. I would also question or get confirmation of what transmission oil was used.
  25. I have to totally agree. I know that I feel a lot better just going for a drive to a further bus stop instead of walking to a closer bus stop. Anyway good sleuthing to get the part number and pictures for Tony. While you are waiting to get back on the road, have a look at this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=catZDDtJLKY
